Gas stoves may contribute to early deaths and childhood asthma, new Stanford study findsFor decades, scientists have known the flames from a gas stovetop produce nitrogen dioxide, a pungent gas that can inflame a person’s lungs when inhaled. But for the first time, a team of researchers from Stanford University and Oakland-based research institute PSE Healthy Energy published a nationwide estimate of the long-term health consequences associated with cooking with natural gas and propane stoves.

We do not know how gas stoves are depleting our homes.?The papers report authors, including scientists from Central California Asthma Collaborative, PSE Healthy Energy, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, suggest that the combination of NO2 exposure caused by fossil-fuel burning is linked to around 200,000 current childhood asthma cases, with nitrogen dioxide making up one-quarter of them.
